The top of the Dayton Daily News sports section on Jan. 1, 2005,told us that former Troy High School and Ohio State standout runningback Bob Ferguson had died.
The next day, this section ran a column from William C. Rhoden ofthe New York Times suggesting that then-OSU Athletics Director AndyGeiger retire (which he soon did).
Onward, there were innumerable exciting, exhilarating,heartbreaking, tear-jerking moments in the local and national sportslandscape that appeared in these pages.
UD was rebuilding. Wright State was even, again. Colonel Whitefootball player Bobby Martin -- who doesn't have legs -- madenational headlines, as did teen golf sensation Michelle Wie, whoplayed in the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Lebanon.
Ryan Hamby will long be remembered for The Bobble, although theBuckeyes seniors proved their worth. The Warbirds made theirtumultuous debut. The Jets made the championship game. The Dragonsstill took their starters out early. The Bombers began their 15thseason.
And the Reds . . .
Well, they were the Reds.
Many local sports fans said thank goodness for the Bengals. AndBrowns fans, at least now you have Charlie Frye.
