HELP FOR COLLEGE AVAILABLE - Dayton Daily News (Dayton, OH)

High school seniors interested in a career in journalism can winmoney for college and paid summer internships for up to five yearsthrough two local programs.

Applications for the $2,500 Si Burick Journalism Scholarship canbe obtained from area high school guidance counselors. Eligiblestudents must live in Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Butler, Shelby,Darke, Preble or Warren counties.

Applications for the scholarship must be postmarked by March 31.

The scholarship, which helps with first-year tuition, honors thelate Si Burick. He was a Dayton Daily News sports editor for 58years and was inducted into the writers wing of the Baseball Hall ofFame.

The scholarship, in its 16th year, is awarded by the DaytonFoundation from an endowment made by individuals and corporations inBurick's memory.

Si Burick scholars also can participate in the Mickey Davis SummerInternship program at the Dayton Daily News.

Davis was a reporter, editor and columnist for The Journal Heraldand the Dayton Daily News, who died in 1997.

The paid summer internships begin the summer before thescholarship winner begins college and continue through the summerafter graduation from college.

'Si Burick scholars have gone on to form great careers in themedia and elsewhere. The training you get at the Daily News istransferable to all walks of life,' said Jeff Bruce, editor of theDayton Daily News. '(And) it's a heck of a lot of fun.'
