Tom Archdeacon, the horse, is honored
COLUMBUS -- Tom Archdeacon -- the five-year-old gray thoroughbredowned primarily by longtime Dayton area horseman George Smith andnamed after Dayton Daily News Sports columnist Tom Archdeacon --received the Special Recognition Award at the Ohio ThoroughbredBreeders and Owners annual banquet last week.
Stabled in Chicago and trained by Smith's son Kep, a CentervilleHigh grad, Tom Archdeacon was honored as the state's top Ohio-bredwho ran solely out of state. Racing 10 times at Arlington Park andHawthorne Park in 2008 -- after coming off surgery for a hind legcrack -- he finished in the money five times. In 21 lifetime starts,he has three wins -- including an Awad Stakes victory -- five secondplace finishes and three thirds.
Catlaunch, a seven-year-old gelding, was named the state's tophorse.
Former clubhouse boy 'took Gooden's tests'
NEW YORK -- Convicted steroids dealer Kirk Radomski, the New Yorkman who was one of the central witnesses in baseball's MitchellReport, told ESPN on Sunday he twice took urine tests in place ofDwight Gooden when he was a clubhouse boy for the Mets from 1986-95.
Radomski, 39, has written a tell-all book called 'Bases Loaded'that is to be released Tuesday.
Torre's new book takes on Yankees
NEW YORK -- Joe Torre takes some harsh swings at Alex Rodriguez,Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees in a book due out early nextmonth, according to N.Y. newspaper reports.
'The Yankee Years' reveals that Rodriguez was called 'A-Fraud' byhis teammates and the star slugger developed an obsession withshortstop Derek Jeter.
Torre, who managed the Yankees from 1996-2007 before taking overthe Los Angeles Dodgers last season, also says he was betrayed byCashman, longtime general manager.
Simon advances in Australian Open
