Troy girls win title, state berth - Dayton Daily News (Dayton, OH)

The Troy girls would've settled for a spare but nailed a strike.

The Trojans, who entered the Ohio High School Athletic AssociationSouthwest District bowling championship at Eastern Lanes inMiddletown hoping to advance to state, captured their first districttitle and, with it, the accompanying berth in the state tourney inLancaster.

'It's an awesome feeling,' Troy High School coach Rob Dever said.

'Our goal was to move on to state, but to win is great.'

Dever and Co. finished with a tournament total of 4,734 pins tooutdistance Centerville (4,677), Beavercreek (4,658), Fairborn(4,590) and Cincinnati McAuley (4,587), but the title wasn't decideduntil the final five Baker games.

Troy received a typically stellar performance from senior LisaShinall, who rolled a 643 series, good for sixth in the field.

Teammates Danielle Rohr and Christina Lacey each bowled 569s,while Alicia Simpson had a 558. Hilleary Ross added a 495 series.

The Trojans, who sat third after the opening game, ralliedmethodically with 960-956 rounds to take the lead following the thirdgame.

Although the Trojans fell behind Centerville midway through the 10Baker games, they rallied with a 226 total in the sixth game toretake the lead for good.

All told, the Trojans averaged 190 during the 10 Baker games.

Four of the 16 teams -- Troy, Centerville, Beavercreek anddefending state champion Fairborn -- at the state tournament hailfrom the Greater Western Ohio Conference.

Troy won the GWOC regular-season North Division title.

Meyer named Ivy League rookie of week

Michelle Meyer, a freshman guard at Dartmouth College, recentlywas named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after coming off the bench toscore 11 points in the final 10 minutes of the game, rallying the BigGreen from a doubledigit deficit.

Meyer, a Covington High School graduate, then sealed the comeback -- a 60-56 upset of first-place Cornell -- with a game-saving stealwith five seconds left.

Meyer then added two points and three assists in another Dartmouthwin, this one over Columbia.

For the season, she has scored 21 points and snared six rebounds.

Those victories kickstarted a six-game winning streak for the BigGreen, the lone Ivy League women's team above .500, which has creptto within one game of the league lead.

OHSAA honors editor

Ken Barhorst, the sports editor of the Sidney Daily News since1974, and Dayton Daily News sports feature columnist Tom Archdeaconwill be honored by the OHSAA's Southwest District Board of Controlfor their commitment to local high school athletics.

Both will be honored this weekend at a reception at the Universityof Dayton Arena.

Barhorst, a father of three and grandfather to four, has wonwriting awards throughout the course of his career, which spans threedecades.
