SHOOTOUT LEAVES ONE WOUNDED, ONE HELD
DAYTON -- A shootout Tuesday on McCleary Avenue near RavenwoodAvenue left a man in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital asDayton police tried to sort out what led to the gun fight.
Witnesses said as many as 20 shots were fired about 3:30 p.m.,Sgt. Gary White said, and that after the wounded man was removed byambulance, armed men apparently followed it to the hospital where asecond altercation ensued.
No shots were fired there, and hospital security received backupfrom police, who seized six vehicles, handguns and a quantity ofdrugs, White said.
One man was arrested and 12 others were being questioned.
'We're trying to sort out what we have,' said White, who saidpolice were looking for other men believed to have been involved inthe shooting.
SPORTS COLUMNIST FACES DUI CHARGE
DAYTON -- Dayton Daily News sports columnist Tom Archdeacon wasarrested Feb. 25 for speeding and driving under the influence onInterstate 75 in Miami County.
Archdeacon was stopped about 11:30 p.m. by a trooper with thePiqua post of the Ohio Highway Patrol for driving 80 mph in a 65-mphzone.
He refused to take a breath test and was cited for speeding andDUI.
Archdeacon is to appear at a later date in Miami County MunicipalCourt, said his attorney, James Ambrose.
BOARD REJECTS TROTWOOD LEVY
TROTWOOD -- The city school district will not have a levy requeston the May 3 ballot after a ruling Tuesday by the Montgomery CountyBoard of Elections that the resolution the school board approvedrequesting the levy was too vague.
The school board wanted two levies to be placed on the ballot toreplace operating and improvement levies voters approved in 2000.
Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell's staff rejected theproposed language as unclear, according to Vic Whisman, assistantMontgomery County prosecutor and legal adviser to the board ofelections.
The dollar amounts listed in the resolution proposed by the boardalso did not match the millage the resolution requested, among otherproblems, he said.
ELECTIONS BOARD NAMES FINLEY CHAIR
DAYTON -- Republican Sue Finley was named chairwoman of theMontgomery County Board of Elections on Tuesday.
The four-member board reorganized to comply with state law thatrequires the board chair and the director of the elections staff beof different political parties.
The board installed Steve Harsman, a Democrat, as office directorin January after demoting former director Steve Heizer, a Republican,to deputy director.
Finley, a 16-year board veteran, replaced Tom Ritchie as chairafter a unanimous board vote.
TWO ACCUSED OF GOLF COURSE DAMAGE
NEW CARLISLE -- Two 19-year-old New Carlisle men are accused ofusing ATVs to cause more than $5,000 in damage to Sugar Isle GolfCourse on Sunday.
Eldon Adamson of 239 Orth Drive and Dustin Farley of 1797 N.Hampton Road were charged with felony vandalism.
They reportedly admitted to Clark County sheriff's deputies theyhad put 'doughnuts' -- leaving tire tracks on the grass by driving incontinuous circles -- on the green at the second hole.
GREENE RAISES MILEAGE PAYMENTS
XENIA -- Greene County commissioners voted, 2-1, Tuesday toincrease the mileage reimbursement from 30 cents to 33 cents a mile.
Commissioner Ralph Harper, the dissenter, said he preferred themileage reimbursement, which took effect March 1, be increased to 35cents until the next budget is approved in July.
Funds for mileage reimbursements are factored into eachdepartment's budget.
When county employees use their personal vehicles for countybusiness, the county saves money on gas and maintenance on itsvehicles, the commissioners said.
THREE MAKE DAYTON RACE FOR MAYOR
DAYTON -- All three mayoral candidates were cleared Tuesday toappear on the May 3 primary ballot.
The Montgomery County Board of Elections certified thatchallengers David Bohardt and Barbara Temple had received enoughsignatures for their names to appear with Mayor Rhine McLin. Herpetitions had been approved earlier.
The top two vote-getters will move on to the general election inNovember. The candidates are:
- Rhine McLin, 56, the former state representative and statesenator who is finishing her first term as mayor. A Democrat, shedefeated two-term incumbent Mike Turner in 2001.
- Barbara Temple, 54, a former major with the Dayton PoliceDepartment. She is a business consultant and has been interimdirector of the Miami County emergency dispatch center. She has votedas a Republican and Democrat in primaries.
- David Bohardt, 58, who is executive director of the HomeBuilders Association of Dayton and the Miami Valley. He is running asan Independent.
